Make it your first resolution that, if you havent already done it, sign up for the RG. You can still get in. Call Bill Rouse or Carol Young and join us in a couple of weeks for the Phoenix RG!
Speaking of resolutions ... be sure to read Hutchs column. Hes got some good, thoughtful suggestions for enhancing your membership in Mensa. After all, why did you join, if not to take part?
And speaking of "why did you join ..." thats a question which I see repeated over and over in the other Mensa publications that cross my desk. It appears to be the question of the year, if not the decade. Why DID you join Mensa, if not for the opportunity to meet and interact with other bright people?
Interact. That means a two-way (at the minimum) proposition. Not reading, not sitting at home watching TV, not waiting to be entertained, but getting out and meeting people. Going to PTA or salons or soirees. Hosting something youre interested in.
A few months ago I challenged a disgruntled member to start a discussion group, since he found so little intellectual stimulation here. Hmmm. Havent heard from him since. At one time I was involved in a "question of the month" group, where we met, wrote down discussion topics, threw them into a hat, pulled one out, and vóilà! that was the discussion for the evening. If I could, I would start it in Mensa, but putting the newsletter together and hosting FSM pretty well taps me out in terms of spare time.
So my New Year challenge to all of you is, get involved. Anybody interested in starting a discussion group? Helping MERF? Starting up the garage sales again? Offering a "tutoring clearinghouse" to the community, made up of Mensans with specialties and an ability to tutor someone who otherwise couldnt afford it? How about helping sponsor a Habitat for Humanity house, where wed go down on weekends and help build?
Get away from the TV, the Internet,
