Young at Heart

By Carol Young

I sit amidst the chaos that is my home – more chaotic than usual. We’ve had the carpeting removed and tiling put down. Looks ab fab, but having to move all the living room furniture into the family room has rendered BOTH rooms uninhabitable.

Okay, I’ll have a little cheese with that w(h)ine. And carry on bravely.

BRAGGING A BIT:

Greater Phoenix Mensa placed 3RD3RD!! -- in the Nation in the last Culture Quest! We beat out LA by 1 point to do so and bring about $150 of prize money into the GPM coffers. Congrats to Barbara Bradley, for organizing the team consisting of herself, Howie Asaki, Lion Rowley, Gene Holmerud and yours truly..

I’m sure our one-point margin of victory was that lucky guess about the literature event that takes place yearly in Elko, Nevada (for fun we put "cowboy poetry" - and it was the correct answer!). Okay, so maybe it was some of the other lucky guesses we took. But "lucky guesses" are based on knowledge we’ve accumulated in other areas of our life and stored them away – something Mensans do as standard operating procedure.

Start thinking now about forming a team and entering this fun trivia quiz. Some groups have a few teams competing in different rooms of one home, then regrouping for a participatory buffet and comparing answers. If we have enough interest, GPM can do that too. We ended the 90 minutes of rapid recall laughing and figuring we did respectably well by our personal standards. And look where we wound up. This could happen to you, too.

HELP WANTED:

Don’t forget that there’s always room for volunteers. If you want to get active, we’re looking for a Scholarship Chair, Community Services Coordinator (GPM was on a PBS fund raiser once and we’d love to do it again) and RG workers. Oh, and anything else you’d like to organize. Call me at 243-0480 and tell me what you’d like to do to make Greater Phoenix Mensa "greatest".
