Call for Volunteers

By Jason Grimm

Editor’s note: Jason was concerned that this might be too harsh. I think the numbers speak for themselves: out of 800 GPM members, the same very few people volunteer. The posts are open to everyone in good standing – why are the same people running every year? Because no one else steps forward. So if you don’t like the ExCom, run for it yourself!

Last year, I heard a comment about Greater Phoenix Mensa's Executive Committee members being power hungry, because the same people were on the board each year. Having served for the past four years, I can tell you this comment is completely meritless.

My therapist tells me I take too much responsibility on myself. I told him I'd get back to him when I could free up some time. This year I'm Election Chair. At press time, we have exactly enough volunteers to populate the Executive Committee, one for each post on the ballot. With a few exceptions it's the same people as last year. This is not a bad thing, as these are capable, involved, fun people. The election itself is a rubber-stamp formality, ratifying the volunteers - twelve volunteers out of approximately 800 members.

If you're interested, I have a suggestion: Get involved. The post of Member at Large could use a few more people, and it merely requires you attend a few Mensa events throughout the year. It makes a great way to introduce yourself to the rest of the club.

Don't procrastinate, we have a time limit, April fifth.
