Candidate: Mike Johnson |
I have been an active member of Phoenix Mensa for over 20 years. I've started/coordinated the Music SIG, TV Views, Bookpulpit, Motorcycle SIG, Skeptics and MITs (Mensa Investment Typhoons - hot air going round in circles).I send you your MAAM - I'm the FSM labeling specialist.
In my real life I've had a career as a physicist/engineer/statistician with Rolls Royce and GE. I've been running my own technical consulting business for several decades in the US and the Orient (this is coming to you from Kuala Lumpur by the magic of E-mail). I now support myself by day trading from home on the Internet.
Position Statement
I was prompted to run for member-at-large to get a vote on the ExComm and protect members from the threat of a "we have money, let's spend (waste?) it". One proposal was to rent the Science Museum for an evening ($1,000 - $3,000). The proponent, in defense, suggested we could exclude kids that way???? I suspect the usual six members would turn up. As you see, I am a Dale Carnegie dropout - but this is the straight scoop. I just want a vote to moderate such proposed spending.
I would prefer to see money spent on a member friendly database that would could access over the internet to conveniently locate individual members with common interests. I know about 50 of our 700 local members and feel a little investment in a DB could make most of them accessible. With all our "genius" members it could probably be done virtually cost free anyway.
I also think we should encourage more intellectual (shudder) activities in Mensa. Much of the time Mensa seems like any other of many mainly social groups. Our supposed distinction is in being smart - why do we hide it so often? We can still be social too.
Finally please do me a favor and protect me from my temporary lapse of sanity after 20 years - vote for my opponents - I will.
