Greater Phoenix Mensa's May Executive Committee Meeting
1) Meeting called to order at 1:02, May 2nd, 1999.
2) Present were:
1) Greater Phoenix Mensa (GPM) is up for Mensa Group of the Year, and has a chance to win.
Carol Young wants money to buy service pins from national Mensa to give as rewards. Jerry Corbin moved, Bruce Stiles seconded, $50 be spent for reward pins. Voted. Approved.
Carol Young felt Mike Johnson's campaign statement was negative, and felt Mensa's intellectual activities were more positive. Mike Johnson was invited to respond as New Business.
2) Jerry Corbin announced a party the last Saturday of June, the 28th. The party will be held at an art gallery in downtown Phoenix, at 11 East Ashland. Artistic GPM members are invited to exhibit. There will be a party to personally sign invitations Wednesday, June 2nd, 6:00 pm, at Applebees, Central and Camelback.
Jerry Corbin was pleased the April Forum drew 55, as far as is known, a record. He is afraid the Forum might outgrow its current location, and called for suggestions for a new location.
3) Current membership is 790, an increase of 23-percent. Gene Holmerud attributed the success to Jerry Corbin's excellent Forums and Stephenie Crowley's excellent Newsletter. Jerry Corbin also pointed out the contributions of Pete Moskovitz and the attitude he presents to test takers.
$8,632 is in GPM's bank account. There are other funds.
4) Susie Kilgard is leaving GPM. It is hoped another member will step forward for her Maam newsletter column. Carol Young might consider it.
Stephenie Crowley questioned whether she had the final GPM election ballot for publication. Election Chair Jason Grimm confirmed she did. There was a discussion of using e-mail for balloting, mainly involving questions of anonymity. Carol Young volunteered to receive ballots at her e-mail address, carolrants@been-there.com. Members submitting ballots should realize they have the option of maintaining their anonymity by using post office mail. Carol would pass the results of the ballots to the Election Chair.
5) The Regional Gathering (RG) Committee is seeking a new site, though GPM will probably retain the recent location. Stephenie Crowley desires the attendance list from the previous RG. No decision on site has been made, though her goal is to decide by the end of May. Kebba Buckley mentioned an asset, Mensan Greg Webster, who works for Best Western. Stephenie Crowley thanked her.
New Business
6) In response to Carol Young's feeling his campaign statement was negative, Mike Johnson, of the Book Pulpit Special Interest Group, read a quotation:
"To let things slide for the sake of peace and friendship when a person has clearly gone wrong, and refrain from principled argument because he is an old acquaintance, a fellow townsman, a schoolmate, a close friend, a loved one, an old colleague or old subordinate, or to touch on the matter lightly instead of going into it thoroughly, so as to keep on good terms, the result is that both the organization and the individual are harmed."
In the following discussion it was explained the quotation was meant to express his understanding, though his desire for openness.
7) Carolyn Robinson mentioned the July GPM Executive Committee (ExCom) meeting would be on July 4th weekend. The meeting was moved to July 11th.
8) Bruce Stiles mentioned GPM ExCom balloting closed June 10th. The Bylaws state the balloting must be secret. Ken Brown cautioned prudence in allowing e-mail balloting, stating GPM had a bylaw imperative to preserve anonymity.
There was a discussion of the post of Member at Large, and GPM's bylaws not stating they are elected. Discussion tabled.
9) Ken Brown wanted to pursue having a picnic. The picnic had previously been set aside for lack of a sponsor. Ken Brown felt he would like to sponsor a picnic in the fall.
10) Bruce Stiles proposed lowering the price of the RG.
11) Adjournment was called for at 1:48.
