October Parties

By Leigh Butler

Our Soiree on October 2nd will be at the home of Carol and Larry Stubbs in Ahwatukee at 11827 S. Winnebago. To get there from Elliott and I-10, drive west to 48th Street, south 1/2 mile to Kiva, turn East (L), and Left again on Winnebago to the cul de sac on the Right and their house therein on the Left.

Our Salon on the 16th will be our annual Gore National Monument at the home of Alan and Ursula Gore at14244 North 25th Avenue in Phoenix. From I-17 & Thunderbird drive East to 26th Avenue, North almost a half mile to Gelding and East to the first cul de sac on the right. Good luck finding a parking space. See Alan's article for more details.

Our Halloween party on the 30th is becoming a tradition at Bill Rouse's house. He lives at 156 North MacDonald in Mesa, which is accessed from either the 202 or 60 (the Superstition) highways. From the latter, exit at Country Club, drive north to University, east 3 streets to MacDonald, south to #156 on the right. Bill will be wearing a costume, so why don't you too, to show him how much you appreciate all the trouble he goes to? We hope you are fully recovered from the scare that that ticker of yours gave us, Bill.

Our very first Sojourn will be on January 29th, meeting at the Casa Grande Ruins at 2 p.m. From there we will go a party at the home of Randy and Susan Wortman a few miles away. They will hand out photocopies of a map to their home. Randy is the Principal of Casa Grande Union High School and they have a Japanese student visiting, so they want the theme of the party to be Multi Cultural. This should allow you time to find an interesting costume or accessory, if you want to wear one. More in the January MAAM. Call me if you have an idea for a 5th Saturday party out of town, 602 264 9321.

We partied hardy at the Birderland RG, which was more like a Sojourn for us GPM-ers, with so many familiar faces. Alan Weisman, the speaker, is a Time journalist who electrified us idealists with tales and photos of Gaviotas, the village in the formerly barren and desolate plains of Columbia. There, a team of visionaries and technicians are recreating the world by utilizing the simplest modern means for living well and off the land. They are actually regrowing the rain forest, and the benefits are astounding. The most thrilling part of the weekend for me was watching Joni Gibson blossom socially in the warm and friendly welcome in Sierra Vista. Joni is a Fulbright Scholar and passed the Ohio Bar before losing all but .05% of her eyesight. She and Monroe, her seeing eye dog, had a ball in such an atmosphere.
