Regional Ramblings

By Bob Cox, RVC Region 9

December! Is your membership Y2K compliant? Although the membership year runs until the end of March, you can save quite a bit of money by renewing in December. You can take advantage of the three- or five-year discount plans even if your membership does not run out in 2000. You can also pay for any number of years at the old price. You will pay more if you wait. Just get your membership number and your credit card and call the National Office.

You will also gain points for your Local Group for the Group of the Year competition by renewing by the end of January. This is where the majority of the points are gained. If 50% of your members renew by the end of January, and 90% have paid up by the end of March, your group will receive 140 points.

If you are interested in saving money, you should know that to get the best deal on registration for the GLAAM RG, Walk of Fame (February 18-21), you need to register by December 15. San Diego’s Three Days Before the Mast (May 26-29) needs to be paid in December and so does the 2000 Annual Gathering in Philadelphia.

Don’t forget to sign up for the Leadership Development Workshop (February 25-27), too. This is an event that will be very helpful to you personally, and to your Local Group. It is also a way to earn more points for your Local Group in the Group of the Year contest.

Have you heard about the Copper Black Award for Creativity? This new monetary award is open to any Mensan who patented an invention or created something that has practical value to others. More information and nomination forms are available from the National Office.

Scott Benjamin from Tucson, our Regional Advisor on Web Pages, is setting up a Region 9 Web Page. All Local Group Web Sites should be connected to this site. Contact Scott at scott.benjamin@optics.arizona.edu to be sure yours is, or to get more information.

By the time you read this, National Testing Day will be over. Most of our groups are participating this year, a big improvement on last year. Look forward to an increase in your membership in the new year. Please make a special effort to make these new members welcome.

Have a safe and happy holiday season, and don’t eat too much.
