Election 99: The Slate

It’s election time again in GPM. We’ve had a nice group of people volunteer … and an even larger group NOT volunteer. And I’m looking forward to another dazzling voter turnout for June’s issue – maybe we’ll actually get double-digit response!! Dare I hope for something over 10? So if you’re unhappy because "the same old in-crowd" is on the ExComm again, it’s your own fault. You’ve had plenty of time to send in your campaign statement. If you’re a member in good standing (meaning, you’re paid up on dues), you’re eligible for one of the positions. Don’t give me that "I’ve got a job (kids, cats, UFOs, whatever) to take care of." Every current member of ExComm is employed, too. The positions don’t require much time – what we really need is someone who’s willing to be on the front line, willing to stick the ol’ neck out and take the flak, good and bad, that comes with making decisions. And your current slate has the only people who have come forward. And if we can have an ExComm member in a wheelchair, and another who’s blind, then what’s your excuse for not getting to the meetings? (Actually, I’m left with a strong sense of deja vu … I’m sure I wrote this same editorial last year …) But if you’re too lazy, or whatever excuse you want to use, to even return your ballot, then you deserve whomever has stepped forward to run. And consider yourselves darned lucky that anybody else did care enough to do so, and doubly blessed because the people who’ve put themselves on the line are capable, willing, and generally pretty nice. Read Carol’s "Young at Heart" for the rest of it. We’ve got another position, not on ExComm, that we need filled. How willing are you?

Note 1 - Though common usage for GPM is the terms "Local Secretary" and "Assistant Local Secretary," Chairman and Vice-Chairman are the terms used in GPM bylaws.

Note 2 - GPM bylaws list no limit on the number of Members at Large.
