AG 2002 Update

By Carol Young

It’s never too early to begin planning a great party. And AG2K2 (better known as AG 2002: Desert Delights) is no exception. Already, a solid committee has been formed to work out all the details that will make this AG the most memorable ever. GPM’s got lots going for it to insure that this AG will be a hard one to top. For starters, our location can’t be duplicated anywhere in the US: The Scottsdale Princess is a one-of-a-kind resort that you just won’t find anywhere else. And at $89 for a single/double (yep, $89 – for a room at a 4-star, 5-diamond resort) how could you not want to join us on site for the fun. And we could have stopped at the great price for the room, but then we went one better: ALL restaurants at the resort will offer 2-for-1 dining for Mensans registered for the AG. That includes the Marquessa, one of only a very few 5-star restaurants in the country.

Your AG Committee has been hard at work for a few months already, but even with a high level of activity already in place, there’s plenty of room for more of you to join in and help. And there are tasks for all levels of involvement.

"I want to get really get involved" - If you’ve decided you really want to dig in, there are lots of chances:

Plan a Kids’ Track. This was a big hit in Philly and would be equally popular here in Phoenix. If you love working with children, consider planning 4-5 events for kids each day so they can experience their own AG.

Coordinate tours. We’ll be negotiating contracts through our Hotel Liaison, but still need someone to serve as host/hostess to work with the travel agents we use and tend to all the details of each tour. So far, we’re considering Sedona, the Canyon and Kartchner Caverns.

Plan a night out at Bank One Ballpark. We want to introduce our guests to our unique baseball facility and are looking for someone who will organize an outing to a game (assuming the team is playing a home stand during the run of the AG).

Organize a golf tournament or an early morning horseback rides. The AG location is so close to several facilities that make these activities a natural.

Can you think of something you’d like to see at the AG? Volunteer to organize it. We’re only limited by our imaginations and the number of people who step forward to help.

"I’d like to help, but don’t have a whole lot of time" - If this fits you, volunteer to help us type, stuff envelopes, stuff the registration folders, shop for food or bake at home for Hospitality. We’ve got a need for lots of people who will give a few hours here and there to get these smaller, but critical jobs done.

"I have no time. I wish I did, but I don’t" - Don’t despair; there are still ways you can help. Volunteer space in your freezer for storing pre-baked food.

There are many ways you can get involved. The point is to do it. This is Greater Phoenix Mensa’s chance to shine. Join us. Call Carol Young at 602-243-0480 to discuss opportunities.
