Roll-M: Gun Shy

Movie Review by Susan Sackett

Gun Shy (starring Liam Neeson, Sandra Bullock, Oliver Platt, Mitch Pileggi; written by Eric Blakeney; directed by Eric Blakeney; rated R).

This time of year, we've got two kinds of movie viewing choices - Academy AwardŽ contenders, which were actually released in December 1999, in order to meet the Academy's deadline, and pictures that stand no chance as summer blockbusters or Academy consideration for year 2000. Welcome to March. Welcome to Gun Shy. Now go home.

You really don't want to waste any time seeing this one. Red Flag Number One: Sandra Bullock, who hasn't had much success with her film career lately, was the picture's executive producer. Meaning: She's got a piece of the pie and some input into script, editing, etc. Result: She's out of her league. Especially in the script department. Someone -- I would hazard a guess Ms. Bullock -- deemed it necessary for her to have a role in the film, so she inserts herself here and there, thither and yon, in meaningless scenes that do nothing to advance the film and have zero characterization. Liam Neeson is a great talent, but you'd never know it from Gun Shy. Most of his scenes are spent running to the men's room - a burned out DEAgent with a weak stomach. And it goes downhill from there. Scatological references are probably trying to hammer home a message here - this film stinks!

˝ OWL (OUT OF FIVE) - FOR Neeson's bravery in actually appearing in this movie
