The State of GPM

Welcome to our new Young Ms Chair, Travis Mack, and Salon Chair Arleen Williams. Thanks to Michael Hall as the YM fill-in. Now, Community Services Chair Volunteer: Front and Center.

Maybe Sometimes Less is More

Speaking of Salons, I think we all appreciated the first, third and fifth Saturday parties over the past several years and the work that went into them.

My judgement (for which I get paid the big bucks), however, is that in the present demanding society we will be better off (beginning in February) with just a third Saturday SALON AND NEW MEMBER RECEPTION. The membership committee or board will reimburse the hosts for new members, who will get in FREE to their first one. Now we can all focus on setting aside that one Saturday a month for a more highly attended party.

Social Skills 101

Lately I have had some requests to pass along a few hints on greeting newcomers to our events.

First, try to seek out and say hello to anyone you have not yet met. This can be all the difference in the world with regards to their returning.

Secondly, make your first encounter brief. Most people, I am told, prefer to not be corralled and monopolized by one person at a party, happy hour or whatever. If you are find someone enchantingly interesting, spend a few minutes with them then drift away. If the interest is mutual, they will find you later.

Finally, try to work the new members into the group discussions by asking questions or, a task that I personally find difficult, just be quiet for a couple of minutes to give them a chance. Many of us are certainly candidates for that 12 step program, "On and On Anon".

Now, new members, feel free to join us for the most riveting conversations, polite treatment and non-suffocating times of your lives!

And ... AND ... I will see you ALL at the RG.
