To The Editor:

Dear Editor of MAAM:

I am sending this in no official capacity, but as a Mensa member who observed a situation at the Annual Membership Meeting at the Annual Gathering in Philadelphia last week.
There is what I characterize as a privacy issue causing quite a bit of controversy in at least one Local Group, where a membership directory was apparently put on the WEB and no provision was made for members opting out of the list.

The answer that was given — that the Mensa International bylaws require members to agree to be published in a directory — was, in my mind, wrong. I believe someone can be published in A directory without being required to be published in EVERY directory (and in any medium available).

I understand that the AMC has set up a committee to deal with this issue, but having seen the speed at which many committees operate, I suspect further controversy will abound in some groups.

It would have been a good spot for strong leadership at the national level to take a stand for its members, even at the risk of some need for negotiation with the international organization for a favorable interpretation of its bylaws.

Regards, Mel Anderson
