AG Volunteers Needed

by Carol Young, AG Chair

We have several positions that I’d like to get some help with.  Many

don’t even involve your leaving your home and some can be done

entirely via e-mail.  I realize that everyone is busy with work and families,

but your involvement could be as little as a few hours each month.  And

your reward will be to get involved in the biggest event Greater Phoenix

Mensa has seen in almost 20 years and feel more a part of this

organization than you will if you just sit home, read your e-mail and get

your newsletter each month.

Here are some of the positions open:

SPEAKER GREETER - You’ll get a group of individuals to meet our

speakers at registration, escort them to their session rooms and

introduce them.  We’ll have a Volunteer Coordinator gathering names, so

all you’ll have to do is get the names, contact the individuals and sign

them up.

ROOMMATE COORDINATOR - You’ll be the one people will be told to

contact if they’re looking for a roommate.  You’ll keep a list of names of

anyone who expresses an interest in a roommate and pass those names

on to anyone who calls looking for a roommate.  Strictly an “as needed”

position and you may not even get any calls.  But we want someone we

can point to if people start inquiring.  This is one of those “nice to have

available” services.

SCHEDULE POSTER - At the AG itself, you’ll make sure the day’s

events for each room are posted outside the room.  The posters will be

made up for you and all you’ll have to do is spend 15-20 minutes each

morning walking around and putting up that day’s sessions outside the

appropriate room.

BALL GAME COORDINATOR - if anyone loves baseball and want to

coordinate a trip to BOB (provided the D-Backs are in town over July 4-8,

2002), this is the position for you.   You’ll contact B.O.B. for group tix

and help coordinate transportation to and from the ballpark.  If the D-

Backs aren’t in town during that period or if, oh please please don’t let

this happen, the strike that’s looming occurs, this position is a wash.

PRE-AG COOKER - are you willing to bake cookies, breads or any other

sweets that can be frozen?  Then please consider volunteering to cook.

Once a month or twice a month, you’ll spend an afternoon cooking and

wrapping goodies in air-tight packages.  If you have room in your freezer

to keep what you’ve cooked, great.  If not, we’ll arrange to have you

deliver your goodies to a Mensan who’ll store it, or pick it up from you.

If this position appeals to you,  please also consider hosting “AG

Cooking Parties” - a regular event we’ll post in the MAAM.  Orange

County did this to great success in their AGs.  It also saves money and

helps insure a profit for GPM.

GOLF TOURNAMENT COORDINATOR - We’re close to a great golf

course and if someone is interested, we can stage a tournament during

the AG.

KIDS’ PROGRAM COORDINATOR - We’ll be looking for people who

want to put together a separate program for our younger visitors.  We’ll

designate one room as the “Kid Room” and you can plan activities from

about 9AM to about 4PM.  We’ll expect anyone who brings a child to

this room to donate an hour or two helping out in the room, so you won’t

be alone.

Please consider joining the committee.  It’s been a long time since we’ve

had an AG and who know when – or if – we’ll ever host one again.  Take

this opportunity to get involved so we can demonstrate to American

Mensa what a great local group we have.  If you’re interested in any of

the above, contact me at 602-243-6136 or e-mail me at carolrants@been-

there.com

Thanks.
