Forum on Superconductivity a Big Success!
For those of you not there, the February Forum was very interesting. Professor Dow from ASU gave an interesting and somewhat provocative talk about competing theories of Superconductivity. His comments about why Superconductivity research seems stymied (we haven’t made much progress lately towards the goal of room temperature Superconductors) was a bit controversial. Many questions were raised and a fairly spirited discussion ensued. It was great fun! In my opinion, the spirited intellectual give and take of some of the monthly Forums is one of the best (and most unique) benefits of belonging to Greater Phoenix Mensa.
Out of the 28 people who attended the Forum, over half (including the speaker) showed up for the Post-Forum debriefing at the upscale Uptown Brewery. Here the spirited discussions continued over good food and drink. If you haven’t been to a GPM monthly Forum before, you ought to check one out. The Forum topics cover a wide range of intellectual interests. Sooner or latter, a topic is bound to come up that will peak your curiosity.
New Home Needed for Fold, Staple, Mutilate.
Stevie Crowley and John Seeliger have graciously opened up their home for a long time now (several years) for the monthly GPM activity affectionately known as Fold, Staple Mutilate (or FSM for short). Due to changing circumstances, it is now necessary for us to find a new home for FSM. Thanks Stevie for being a great FSM hostess and coordinator these past years!
The stated purpose of FSM is to take the printed pages from the printer and turn them into the MAAM newsletter that we know and love, and prepare the MAAM’s for mailing. But, in fact, the truth is that FSM is an active social occasion for many GPM members (maybe it has something to do with the free food and drink provided by GPM!). FSM is not all about work, it is usually fun.
Anyhow, we are looking for a new home for FSM. Specifically we hope some GPM member will open up their home for about a couple of hours on (or about) the 23rd of each month. Ideally the location would be fairly centrally located in the valley and be large enough to accommodate at least three worktables. If you are even remotely interested in the possibility of being the FSM host, please let me or any Ex-Com member know.
Leadership Development Workshop
By the time you read this, several members of GPM will have attended the Mensa Leadership Development Workshop in Long Beach, CA. I will provide a report of what we learned and experienced next month.
