Please Renew...

by Glenn Case, Editor

The one main point for this month is simple:  please consider renewing your membership!!   Mensa has much to offer for a bargain basement price.

The speakers we attract both for our forums as well as other events, such as an RG, are often unique and will be found no other place.  We also offer some of the best social outlets of any organization.  Another item to consider about Mensa is that we are all equal.  I like that idea a lot.  It means that anyone who wants to study up on something can be an expert and be respected regardless of their academic qualifications.   One of the other major advantages of Mensa are the Special Interest Groups.  I can say that practically anything you might be interested in, there are other Mensans with a like interest.  Anyway, consider renewing.

We occasionally run advertising in the MAAM.  It is not a major source of revenue, but it is a good sideline and defrays our cost of preparing the issue.   I make a superficial effort to filter ads, but obviously I cannot explore the services in depth.  I will run nothing that smacks of a pyramid scheme or other shady enterprise.  So I appreciate your feed back good or bad on an advertiser.    Thus far, there have been no problems.

I want to comment on our upcoming elections.  There is no hard and fast rule as to what coverage a local Newsletter Editor should give to National Candidates.  I covered the Chair because our own Mel Anderson is running and in fairness the other candidates  were also covered.  I covered the 2nd Vice Chair because Bob Cox is running.  I covered the Secretary because in my judgment the two candidates are par-excellent.   I will admit that a different Editor would likely make a different decision.

As for our local election, please think about volunteering for something or running for office.  Read Jerry Corbin's column as I think he puts the case forth in an excellent manner.   Any organization whether it be a church, a lodge, or an organization like the Humanists, always offers a reward to those who are willing to become involved.

Elsewhere in the issue is a write up on the recent Leadership Development Workshop held in Long Beach.  It was a delightful experience and I hope more of you will consider attending one of these in the future.  It is sort of like a mini RG with fewer people, but excellent presentations on how to better serve Mensa and receive more in return.
