Be darn thankful you live in America.

The United States of America is not perfect.   I did not realize until the other night that a person in certain states can be charged with a felony for engaging in oral sex with their own wife or husband.  Admittedly,  I am not a lawyer nor much of a student of the law, but if the average person would have told me that, I would have been most skeptical.   Yet, it is true.  The person who told me is more than qualified to make such a statement.  I suppose it might even be something that would elicit laughter at a cocktail party.  But, you can go to prison for this.  (Not in Arizona so far as I know.)   I  would be interested in how many people have actually served time for such a grave offense.  I hope it is few.

Oh yeah, here is another goodie that this gentleman mentioned.  Before my wife and I married,  I at one point,  drove her in my car from California to Nevada where we spent the weekend.  Now, of course, those of you who know me, know that I would never dream of having sex with a woman unless I was married to her.  (By the way, if you believe that,  I have a good deal on some prime Arizona ocean front property.)  But if we had engaged in sex, even the ordinary mundane type, I  could have been charged with a felony under the Federal Mann act.  Kinda  grim isn’t it?  Again, I am not personally familiar  with anyone actually going to jail for this in  the case of   two consenting adults.

Now we consider Afghanistan.  Well, I have two daughters.  One graduated with a 3.5/4.0 from college.  The other is now back in college.   Both like nice clothes.  Both work along with raising their kids.  Ordinary  items until you realize that in Afghanistan a woman can be flogged for having too big a peep hole in her bunny suit (whatever those horrible garments are called in Arabic.)  Can be stoned to death for learning how to read and write.  That is grim beyond all comprehension.  In this case it actually happens on a regular basis.

I do want to say that I know Islamic couples such as my next door neighbors who dress and live much like anyone else.  Wear normal clothes and send their kids to school.  But, then, they live in America where you can go to school even if you are a girl and wear fashionable clothing.   Also, a girl is not stoned to death for getting pregnant out of wedlock.

I guess I can live with some of our stupid laws.
