Shoestring Gourmet: Foods of Fall |
September’s Shoestring centered on the grillable dishes we share at the climax of summer. It was not a large bunch this time, but we shared a great deal of good food. Ken Brown got it rolling with his Panamanian ceviche, a habanero-enhanced dish that’s a lot spicier than the better-known Mexican version, and went well with Esther Shaw’s nachos.
Linda & Gerry Brazelton served a tart spinach salad with strawberries and onions; Ursula Gore led off the entrees with creamy grilled salmon and grilled eggplant and peppers. After an interlude of Ken’s Spanish-style gazpacho Andaluz, we were treated to Linda & Gerry’s roast pork loin with onions and applesauce. As a final main course, Jane Khatiblou dished up bratwurst and Italian sausage. For dessert we dined on Esther’s vanilla ice cream with mixed berries, served in Belgian waffle cups.
On Saturday, October 13, we meet at the home of Linda & Gerry Brazelton for cuisine appropriate to the autumn season. We’re talking about fall in general, not Thanksgiving. This is the time of year when buffalo and game meats become available, when the local fresh vegetables are in. It’s also a time of games, and food that goes with those games. To coordinate dishes, call Ursula Gore at 602-863-9648 before Thursday, October 11.
