To the Editor:
I would like to respond to the columns from our LocSec and Editor, who both
bemoan the paucity of participation and volunteerism in GPM.
I would suggest that we may change the situation by choosing
a Steering
Committee to ASK people to run for office and to fill vacancies. I also
suggest that public criticism be outlawed. Mean spirited members who get
their jollies by criticizing and clipping the wings of volunteers should be
discouraged, not given a platform in the MAAM. I’d love to see an Ethics
Committee to serve as Ombudsmen to curtail this type of behavior.
I also suggest that volunteers and elected officials be
publicly praised for
their good works... frequently, and with panache. I can write a whole list
of people who have dropped out of active membership, feeling unappreciated,
after doing great jobs which were followed by silence and worse.
