Letter to the Editor

I know I speak for the many Mensans who are members of the Humanist Society of Greater Phoenix when I say how shocked and saddened we are over the events of  September 11. We have pledged to contribute to those in need with financial aid, as well as in any other way we can, on an individual basis.   Many members have already donated blood, contributed to the Red Cross, the United Way September 11th Fund, and so on.  Although we realize that people with religious beliefs find comfort in prayer, Humanists do not look to the supernatural during difficult times such as these,  as we do not see any evidence for divine involvement. Instead, we choose to follow the words of Robert Ingersoll, who said “Hands that help are better than lips that pray.” And we will do all we can to help those whose tragic losses can hardly be imagined.
