Eleven Months and Counting

by Carol Young

After 2 years of planning Greater Phoenix Mensa stepped into the limelight during the Dallas AG as the host city for next year’s Gathering.    There was lots of enthusiasm among our fellow Mensans at the opportunity to visit us and I was pleasantly surprised at how few of them were daunted by the idea of Arizona in July.  We collected over 70 registrations in less than 4 hours at the AG and more continue to be mailed in.

Now it’s time for US to match THEIR enthusiasm and put on the best AG Mensa has ever seen.  We have a  core of 12 committee members working on all areas of the AG and at least that number working behind the scenes.  WE WANT YOU TO JOIN US!!  Let us know we can count on you for some help.  Not sure how?  Here are some suggestions:

TEENS WANTED!  There were about 20 teenagers at the AG and the good news is that they’ve begun TeenSIG for Mensans age 14 and up.  They requested some programs at the AG that are geared to them and we are excited about having the first “Teen Track” at an Annual Gathering.  We’re interested in a teen (or several teens) to work with our Program Chair and give us feedback about programs that would be interesting and fun for teens.

COOKS WANTED!  We would like to prepare breads and cookies ahead of time.  It’s a great way to not only get more food for the money but also add a home-cooked touch to Hospitality.  If you have an easy recipe for fast breads or cookies or would be willing to try one of our easy recipes, let us know.  We’ll cook ahead of time, freeze it and have it ready during the AG.

DIAMONDBACK FANS WANTED!  If the Diamondbacks are in town over next 4th of July (a good chance, since they were out of town this year and it usually alternates), we’d like to have someone coordinate an outing to a game.  We’ll help and we’ll steer you in the right direction and we’ll help in any way we can.  We just need someone to take over this task and be responsible for it.

NEW MENSANS WANTED!   Are you totally bewildered about what an “AG” is?  At the same time, are you wondering about how you can get involved in the organization you thought enough about to join?  Please call me and let’s talk about this once-in-18-years opportunity that Phoenix has.

There are and will be many small tasks to be done and we want to start a list of people we can call upon as they come up.   All tasks will fit the time you have available and you will not be asked to do anything you don’t have the time or energy to do.

I’ll be updating you each month on our progress and look forward to having many of you joining us to plan this big event.  Contact me at 602-243-0480 or carolrants@home.com
