Corby’s Corner

It’s Election Time!  Although it seems hard to believe, Greater Phoenix Mensa (GPM) will

soon be holding elections to fill positions on the Executive Committee. The Executive positions to be elected include Members at Large (3), Treasurer, Recording Secretary, Assistant LocSec, and LocSec. The new Executive Committee’s term will start July 1st, 2002 and the members are elected for one year.  We have a good slate of candidates running for GPM office. So don’t forget to vote! And I would like to say a word of thanks for the current Ex-Com members. Your volunteer efforts were much appreciated.

Compared to many other local Mensa groups in the country, GPM is one of the more active groups around. The GPM calendar is brimming with several activities each and every week. But GPM is far from perfect. Although GPM has nearly 850 members on its role, only about 10% of the membership are very active. And out of the 10% of members who are very active, perhaps only a quarter of these have assumed any sort of leadership role in GPM in the recent past.

So if it seems to you like it’s the same ole core group of people involved in GPM leadership and volunteer positions, that is because it is indeed the case. This is not a particularly healthy situation.  Like any vibrant organization GPM needs the fresh blood made up of a flow of new volunteers to keep it vital and fresh. And some of the old blood made up of the same ole core group of people is getting tired. This is where you come in.     You may have fresh ideas and enthusiasm about getting more of the inactive GPM members involved, or perhaps you have unique insights about where GPM should be headed. If so, get involved, we need your input and support! Please consider volunteering.  There are many opportunities available that permit you to put in as much or little time as you desire.   Some positions like the Newsletter Editor and LocSec do require more commitment but have their own unique rewards.

The 2002AG is shaping up to be a major event. Be sure to mark your calendars to attend and, if at all possible, volunteer to help out any way
you can.
