Another National Testing Day has come and gone,
and we are reaping the results of our efforts with increased membership numbers.
Speaking of numbers, Greater Los Angeles Area Mensa tested 49 candidates
at one location, and Greater Phoenix tested 44 at another. We are also
very impressed with Utah Mensa, which had a huge candidate-to-membership
ratio. Way to go!
It is not too late to join Merry Mohr of Tucson on the National Nominating
Committee, which will meet at the AG in Phoenix over the Fourth of July weekend.
Have someone from your Board contact me at barbaral8@juno.com so that
I can make sure your group is represented.
April 1 is the deadline for entrance forms to be submitted for this
years CultureQuest (R) competition. You may enter on your
own or arm-twist up to four others (total 5) of your trivia-loving friends.
Each local group may field as many teams as it wishes. If you have a mind filled
with esoteric clutter, this is the contest for you. E-mail De Freshwater at freshwater@qwestionline.com
for sample questions, entry forms and information in general.
Thought I would throw in a few highlights from the last AMC meeting.
- A motion was passed dealing with members who resign while faced
with charges. The overall feeling was that this was not the best way to deal
with such a situation, but it was a stopgap measure until a proposed bylaws change
could be put to referendum.
- A motion about local group websites and e-lists had major word
changes. It was made clear that the local group sets the policy for
the content of its website, and has control over the creation of, and access
to, any e-mail list, chat rooms and other electronic facilities it chooses to
sponsor.
- There was a clarification on the release of information motionthis
one was also reworded. It basically states that information will be released
to a member about another member only if the person whose information
is being sought has agreed to release the information in a national directory.
In other words, the information will not be released on an individual request
basis unless the information can be considered public within Mensa.
- The motion defining the unauthorized use of member information as an act
inimical to Mensa was withdrawn.
- The motion passed specifying that officers need to authorize publication
of their contact information to members within the organization to facilitate
communication. (There are some group officers who do not publish any contact
information, even within their own newsletter. It was felt that this was a
necessary inclusion.)
- We also adopted a policy that prohibits use of the membership list for e-mail
marketing (the phrase electronic contact was changed to e-mail
marketing so that it was clear as to what specifically was being considered
a no-no.)
