Starting a SIG

by Lauri Vickers

Can you believe SEVEN Mensans showed up at South Mountain Park at 6am for a hike in August?!?  I’m still in shock.  Mensa is not known for either its athleticism or its profusion of early birds.  Heck, the only reason why the hikes are at @#%! 6am is because I hate heat stroke worse than mornings!  And that’s why it is named the PAL Hiking SIG.  I wasn’t sure if anyone at all would show (even when we were hiking at humane hours during the cooler weather), so I named it Pete And Lauri (PAL).  I figured if no one else showed, then it would be Pete And Lauri Hiking sure enough!

My point is, don’t hesitate to start a SIG.  Just invite GPM to come along on something you like to do anyway.  If you’re like me and would prefer company, then recruit a Pete to be your co-SIG leader.  That way, you’re sure to be doing something you like with at least one other person you like.  After that, any other Mensans that show up are just icing on the cake.  The cool thing is, they’re automatically going to be birds of a feather because they are showing up to do something you already like to do!  What could be better?

So to put my money where my mouth is, here’s our latest SIG:  ATC Acting Night starting in October!  My mom and I have season tickets to the Arizona Theatre Company at the Herberger Theater, and we always catch dinner beforehand at Sam’s Café in the Arizona Center.  Now, our series is at 8pm on Thursday nights (except for November due to Turkey Day), which is not always the most convenient.  But what is really worthwhile (and definitely a Mensa thing!) about it is that there are Post-Show Discussions (PSDs) on our nights.  Meet the actors and participate in lively discussions about each production!

Single tickets go for $31 to $50, and you can get more info at htpp://www.aztheatreco.org.  I will be entering the performances in the MAAM calendar as they come up, but for anyone who likes to plan ahead, here’s the schedule for our series:

10/24/02 – Much Ado About Nothing
11/26/02 - Blue
1/16/03 - The Fantasticks
2/27/03 – A Moon for the Misbegotten
4/10/03 – Dirty Blonde
5/22/03 – The Drawer Boy

I hope you can join my mom and I for some great performances!  We had a blast last season, and would like to share this one with GPM!
